The main purpose of this research is to design the proportion of calcium carbide residue (CCR) and fly ash (FA) as a pozzolan instead of Portland cement in soil-cement masonry. The specimens were molded in form of interlocking block (Block) and unburned brick (Brick). The appropriate mixtures of Block should comply to Community Product Standard, CPS 602/2547, which should have the compressive strength at least 70 ksc and water absorption in samples which have the oven-dry weight of 1,761-1,840 kg/m3 should not over than 256 kg/m3. Brick should comply to 2006 New Mexico Earthen Building Materials Code which the compressive strength should not less than 21 ksc, flexural stress should over than 3.5 ksc and water absorption should not over than 2.5% in weight if use as an exterior walls with no additional protection. The controlled samples of Block contained the proportion of Portland cement: lateritic soil: fine sand was equal to 1:5:1 and Brick contained Portland cement 6% by weight of lateritic soil, all of the controlled samples met the standard requirements. When using CCR and FA as a pozzolan instead of Portland cement and the ratio of CCR:FA was varied from 0.3:0.7 to 0.7:0.3, the appropriate mixture by weight is 1.5:5:1 with the ratio of CCR:FA is equal to 0.5:0.5. The best Block samples had the compressive strength of 71.5 ksc and the water absorption of 204 kg/m3, all properties pass the CPS 602/2547. While the appropriate amount of CCR and FA in Brick’s mixtures was 8% by weight of lateritic soil, with the ratio of CCR:FA is equal to 0.5:0.5. but didn’t meet the standard. When Portland cement was added in amount of 2.5% by weight of lateritic soil, the best Brick samples had the compressive strength equal to 21.2 ksc, the flexural stress equal to 5.0 ksc and the water absorption equal to 2.44%, all properties met the standard. As a result of this research, we can use CCR which is the by-product material in acetylene production and FA which is the by-product material in power plant as a pozzolan instead of Portland cement in lateritic soil-cement masonry production. Thus, we can heal the world by reuse resources and reduce the global warming.
