Development of a DC High Voltage Pulsating Power Supply for an Electrostatic Precipitator

The aim of this paper is to developed a positive DC high voltage pulsating power supply of 10 kV and 12 V output and input voltages, respectively, for a wire-cylinder type electrostatic precipitator. In this study, the precipitator was consisted of an outer electrode with 30 mm in diameter and 200 mm in length and a discharge electrode with 0.3 mm in diameter. The PWM technique was used to control a pulsed signal voltage via a step-up type Fly-back converter incorporated a power MOSFET at a frequency and duty cycle of 20 kHz and 75 %, respectively. A simple and low cost PIC18F4520 microcontroller system was designed for monitoring and collecting output voltage and frequency of the power supply. It was shown that the output voltage of this power supply was a sharp tip pulse waveform. Finally, 75 % particle collection efficiency was found in this preliminary experiment.
